Evaluating the Impact of Game-based Robotic System for Upper Limb Therapy

Research Objectives: This study investigates the efficacy of incorporating game-based tasks within a 3DoF end-effector robotic system to enhance upper limb recovery. By integrating an engaging DX-Ball game into active rehabilitation exercises, we aim to evaluate the potential improvements in motor function, reaction time, and coordination for individuals undergoing upper limb recovery.

Design: Experimental study.

Setting: In the BioRobotics Laboratory.

Participants: Active rehabilitation exercises were conducted with healthy individuals (age: 25-45 years, weights: 140–180 lb, height: 1.5–1.85 m). Participants engaged in the exercises by manipulating a 3DoF robotic arm to interact with a computer-based 2D game, enhancing their motor recovery process through active participation

Interventions: Participants were seated in front of a robotic arm and interacted with a 2D DX-Ball game displayed on a computer screen. Holding the robotic arm's handle, they controlled a paddle in the game, aiming to hit blocks and prevent the ball from falling. The robotic system, equipped with force sensors, provided guided movements and responsive control, adapting to the participants' applied forces for an optimal rehabilitation experience.

Main Outcome Measures: The study focused on assessing improvements in motor skills, coordination, and reaction times, facilitated by interactive game-based rehabilitation exercises. Outcome measures included the accuracy of movement, response times to in-game prompts, and the ability to complete game-based tasks, indicating the participants' recovery progress.

Results: Preliminary findings suggest that the game-based rehabilitation approach significantly improves participants' motor control and coordination. The engaging nature of the DX-Ball game contributed to increased motivation and participation, with participants showing enhanced ability to coordinate movements and respond promptly to game challenges. Quantitative data on movement accuracy, response times, and task completion rates corroborate the beneficial impact of integrating game-based tasks in robotic-assisted rehabilitation.

Conclusions: Integrating a game-based approach within a 3DoF robotic end-effector system offers a promising avenue for enhancing upper limb recovery. The engaging and interactive nature of the DX-Ball game, combined with the precision and adaptability of the robotic system, contributes to improved motor function, increased participant motivation, and enhanced recovery outcomes. This study underscores the potential of game-based rehabilitation exercises to augment traditional therapy methods, offering a more dynamic and motivating recovery experience for individuals with upper limb dysfunctions.
