Quality of Life After Revascularization: A Prospective Study on PTCA and CABG Patients

Research Objectives: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term quality of life outcomes of cardiac patients who have undergone coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or bypass surgery (CABG). The study mainly focused on assessing the quality of life outcomes for six months after the surgery by considering various quality-of-life dimensions. The research provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of these treatments in improving the overall quality of life for patients with coronary artery disease in a developing world countries.

Design: Prospective Cohort study

Setting: Cardiology clinic in a university hospital

Participants: The study centered on a group of one hundred adult participants with CAD, specifically those who had previously undergone revascularization like PTCA or CABG procedures

Interventions: Observational study

Main Outcome Measures: (SF-36) and WHOQOL-BREF

Results: Mean age of the participants in both groups were similar (60.8 vs. 63.2 years). Statistical analysis revealed noteworthy findings that angina was significantly lower in the CABG group (p=0.01), while physical activity limitation was significantly higher (p= < 0.001). Return to work was significantly higher in the PTCA group. Quality of life in both groups showed significant improvements in all dimensions of Short Form-36 (SF-36), with notable gains in physical functioning, role physical, and role emotional aspects. WHO-QoL scores, indicating enhanced health after post-surgery in both groups. Social domain changes were nonsignificant.

Conclusions: The WHO-QoL analysis indicated better physical functioning for both groups. Psychological, social, and environmental domains had variable changes. As depicted by the SF-36 questionnaire, considerable advancements found in self-assessed quality of life dimensions for patients undergoing for both groups. Overall, the study emphasized the positive association of quality of life outcomes in people undergone PTCA and CABG, with a physical emphasis.
