College Student’s Opinions on Identification and Academic Preparedness for Cases of Intimate Partner Violence Using Cross Sectional Survey Research

Objectives: To investigate student's perceived knowledge of intimate partner violence
To identify student's perceived academic preparedness related to intimate partner violence
To identify student recommendations for academic preparedness on the topic of intimate partner violence

Design: Participants completed an online Google Form survey consisting of the self-rated and open-ended questions which were examined using cross sectional descriptive qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

Setting: Saint Mary's College located in Notre Dame, Indiana

Participants: The data were collected from fall 2023 during a two week time frame. A total of 121 subjects participated in the survey with 29 subjects opting out.

Interventions: n/a

Main Outcome Measures: Self-rated survey data and open ended question responses that were adapted from the Physical Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey (PREMIS).

Results: Student responses revealed a general consensus for the behavioral patterns of victims of IPV, characteristics of offenders, and red flags noticed in a couple’s relationship. However, the agreement on what the behaviors were, was less clear. Responses related to academic preparedness indicated a lack of readiness but an acknowledgment of the need to try to intervene. Two main themes emerged 1) academic and clinical preparedness: increasing awareness on campus with flyers, providing real world situations, and training, and 2) coursework recommendations: lectures devoted to the topic of IPV.

Conclusions: Currently, no established definition of IPV has been determined and there are no standardized practice guidelines in place for the management of IPV. This research supports additional academic and clinical preparedness at Saint Mary’s College through affiliated clubs, lectures, and training. More research is recommended for clarifying the demographics of IPV including members of LGBTQ+, racial, and cultural groups.
