Research Objectives: The research question that was composed was to determine if physical activity has any effects on the QoL of individuals with stroke.

Design: The electronic search strategy resulted in 3268 studies. After the removal of duplicates and the screening of titles and abstracts, 236 studies were assessed for full-text eligibility. 220 studies failed to meet the inclusion criteria and 16 were included in this systematic review (Fig. 1). Studies that were excluded were commonly left out due to the wrong study design.

Setting: The most common settings seen in the studies were a hospital setting., including rehabilitation units, stroke units, an ambulatory care unit, an inpatient care unit, and home-based.

Participants: There were 16 RCTs included, totaling 1,024 participants with chronic or ischemic stroke. The dates of publication ranged from 2014 to 2022. The sample size ranged from 17-160 participants.

Interventions: The duration of treatment sessions varied from 10 days to 12 months, with the most common duration being 12 weeks (n=7). However, certain studies had interventions lasting between 6 and 8 weeks. The frequencies of interventions ranged from 2 times per week to a maximum of 5 days per week. The most prevalent frequency of intervention was 3 times per week. The types of physical activity intervention varied greatly depending on the study. The most common type of intervention was some form of aerobic exercises, such as walking.

Main Outcome Measures: The Generic Questionnaire for the Assessment of Quality of Life, Short Form-12 (SF-12), the Stroke Impact Scale, EuroQol 5, Dimension 5 Level, Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), Short Form questionnaire (SF-36) , Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. QoL was assessed with the following instruments in more than one study: Stroke-Specific Quality of Life Scale, EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 Level,

Results: Table 1 shows that studies produced positive outcomes in overall quality of life (QoL), cognitive domains, and participation in activities of daily living (ADLs) for patients who had suffered chronic stroke.

Conclusions: The limitations of this review include the minimal number of databases used when conducting our initial search. If the number of databases had been widened, there would have been the potential to find more relevant and reliable studies that could have been included in our review. With the limited experience of the reviewers, there is a potential for mistakes and unintended reviewer bias.
