Proceed past the lobby elevators and turn right to enter the West Wing. Proceed down the corridor, turn right and then left. Proceed past the restrooms to the end of the hall and turn right. Proceed down the corridor on the left. Cortez B is the last room on the left.
Human Centered Design (HCD) uses participatory methods to understand human needs and lend to a collaborative design process and development of innovative product deliverables. The objective of this instructional course is to demonstrate the use of HCD principles to design and deliver innovative solutions to complex challenges in learning health systems. Course aims are to introduce methods for seamlessly integrating HCD across the design process; interactive small-group activities using scenario-based case studies; and facilitate practice and discussion of case study solutions, to ensure skill building. Upon conclusion, course participants will have practical tools to innovate development of products and/or processes in learning health systems, using HCD principals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the value and benefits of using Human Centered Design to support, identify the needs of target audiences to guide a collaborative design process, and development of innovative product deliverables.
  • Recognize the value of engaging and collaborating with partners – representing key target audiences to inform the design, development, and implementation of Human Centered Design solutions.
  • Identify and describe key principles and strategies used in Human Centered Design to develop human-centered products and processes.
  • Apply a strategic approach to using Human Centered Design with partners – key target audience members – when designing and developing innovative products and process deliverables to support implementation priorities, evaluation, and impact in learning health systems.
  • Apply the Human Centered Design process in real-world context for targeted solutions relevant to healthcare and rehabilitation settings.
