PLENARY I: Shaping Hope: Empowering Minds Through Alzheimer's Rehabilitation 0881

Rehabilitation for Alzheimer's disease traditionally begins after a patient experiences a fall or significant deconditioning. However, a growing shift in perspective among patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals is highlighting the importance of primary rehabilitation. This approach focuses on intervening early, or even before, the onset of the disease to enhance the remaining abilities and functions of patients. Dr. Jeffrey Burns, Co-Director of the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Center (KU ADRC), has extensive experience in applying lifestyle interventions to support older adults at various stages of Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Burns has explored a variety of proactive strategies, including physical exercise, dietary modifications, and sleep management. As a plenary speaker, Dr. Burns will share his insights into the critical role of early detection and intervention, emphasizing the potential of blood biomarkers and the application of newly approved drugs that target beta-amyloid clearance in the brain, which may significantly enhance the efficacy of rehabilitation strategies. In addition to his leadership role at the KU ADRC, Dr. Burns is at the forefront of the KU Brain Health Initiative. This major institutional project aims to unite professionals from all health disciplines to promote healthy brain aging throughout an individual's life. This comprehensive approach underscores the importance of integrated care and preventive strategies in managing and someday preventing Alzheimer's disease.
