The Social Model conceptualizes disability not as existing within the person (i.e., their condition), but rather as limitations resulting from environmental factors (e.g., institutional, built, natural, and attitudinal structures of society). Despite this, research to understand TBI as a chronic condition with resulting disability overwhelmingly focuses on individual factors. Our panel of expert speakers will argue and demonstrate that environmental factors, specifically neighborhood characteristics, influence post-TBI outcomes, and that attending to these environmental factors is essential if we are to consider TBI from the lens of the Social Model – rather than Medical Model – of disability.

• Demonstrate the utility of three indices of neighborhood disadvantage for predicting TBI outcomes
