The aim of the present study was to answer the following question: How do men and women experience re-integration into home, productive, and social activities after traumatic brain injury (TBI)?
Exploring community integration experiences through a gender lens illuminates the circumstances in which recovery from brain injury takes place, generating valuable knowledge to inform gender-transformative rehabilitation interventions and training for healthcare professionals on gendered disruption of roles and identities, with the ultimate goal of advancing rehabilitation care plans that  reflects unique needs of  people after TBI. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how gender influences the lived experiences of people with TBI in community reintegration
  • Discuss the incongruence between pre-injury roles and post-injury abilities
  • Compare challenges faced by men and women in post-TBI community integration
  • Describe implications for rehabilitation
  • Apply gender-transformative lens to tailor interventions for community integration
  • Discuss gender-specific challenges in community integration following traumatic brain injury (TBI) as highlighted by the lived experiences of men and women with TBI.
