Individuals with spinal cord injuries are at high risk of developing secondary complications in soft tissues, including but not limited to rotator cuff tear, heterotopic ossification, and pressure injuries. These secondary complications are often hard to treat and have tremendous impact on an individual’s quality of life. This symposium will provide a state-of-the-art review of the current standard for diagnosis and early detection of rotator cuff tears, heterotopic ossification, and pressure injuries. In addition, emerging measurements of the soft tissue damage will be demonstrated accompanied by original data, including non-invasive ultrasound-based shear wave elastography, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, and laser Doppler flowmetry system. The presentation will include various perspectives, including consumer, clinician, engineer, and researcher.

  • Describe the current standard of care for soft tissue secondary complications after spinal cord injury.
  • Compare the measurement mechanisms of various clinical and research devices on pressure injury early detection.
  • Mapping the clinical and research devices to pressure injury early detection to pressure injury etiology.
