There is a critical need to prevent fall-related injuries in older adults. Fall-related head and neck injuries occur when the head impacts the ground. Understanding factors that are related to head impact is an important step in preventing fall related injuries. To overcome this gap, our research group has developed a safe and feasible paradigm to investigate head control, head impact and protective behaviors during experimentally induced falls. This symposium will present: 1) data on the public health challenge of fall-related head and neck injuries in older adults; 2) factors related to fall-related head impact; 3) data on an innovative strategy to reduce fall-related head impact in older adults; and 4) future directions in the prevention of fall-related injuries in older adults.
