This symposium will educate clinicians on current evidence regarding neuromuscular electrical stimulation as a modality for preventing and treating shoulder subluxation after an person has experienced a stroke. We will report the protocol used successfully in a large acute care hospital and provide a roadmap for clinicians to implement a program in their facility. We will demonstrate using an NMES unit. The unit that will be demonstrated helped increase the ease of implementing this program. The targeted audience is OT, PT, and healthcare leadership.

Learning Objectives:

• Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify patients at risk for shoulder subluxation.
• Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe the benefits of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for patients after stroke.
• Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify the potential challenges of a neuromuscular electrical stimulation protocol for patients after stroke in acute care.
• Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify the steps necessary to implement a neuromuscular electrical stimulation program in a hospital setting.
• Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify patients at risk for shoulder subluxation.
