A traumatic brain injury (TBI) often disrupts a person's physiology and anatomy, as well as their ability to perform familial and social roles. Therefore, it is essential for people with TBI and their families to understand the effects of biological sex and sociocultural gender in recovery.
This presentation discusses the development of evidence-based infographics on sex and gender topics in TBI, aimed at improving patient-family communication and promoting gender-transformative care. Our iterative participatory design process integrated input from people with lived experience of TBI, their families, and professionals in the field. We developed six infographics presenting information in various text and visual formats, ensuring readability at a Grade 7/8 level. Feedback from participants indicated that the materials aided understanding of complex concepts in an engaging and visually appealing manner.

Learning Objectives:

Examine the iterative participatory design process employed to create infographics on sex and gender topics in traumatic brain injury (TBI), and recognize how it can be applied to other health and science topics.
Discuss the role of stakeholder engagement, including input from individuals with lived experience of TBI, professionals, and brain injury experts, in shaping the content and design of knowledge translation materials.
Identify key considerations for creating accessible and visually appealing infographics on complex topics, including adherence to graphic design and science communication principles, as well as accessibility guidelines.
