The role of the transdisciplinary team is cited as beneficial to patient outcomes especially considering the potential for patients with SCI and/or tracheostomy to have complex needs. A common theme among this population is advancement of diet and progression toward decannulation. With that goal in mind, we will discuss the development of a transdisciplinary approach, supporting our hypothesis that a team enhances patient outcomes. We will review the development of our approach, examples of modalities we employ to evaluate and treat dysphagia and dystussia, and suggestions for patient, caregiver and staff education related to patient management. Participants will leave with a clear outline of next steps in expanding their delivery of services for these patients to optimize outcomes via evidence-based modalities.
Learning Objectives:
Define benefits of transdisciplinary approach to dysphagia/dystussia management in rehabilitation setting
Identify strategies and modalities to improve patient outcomes
Develop plan for multifactor approach to dysphagia/dystussia management in special populations
Define benefits of transdisciplinary approach to dysphagia/dystussia management in rehabilitation setting
