Rehabilitation is the key resource available to enhance the recovery of motor function following stroke, particularly in the subacute and chronic stages. However, care for people with stroke outside of the acute hospital is limited and variable. It is known that people living with chronic stroke have worse health related quality of life than their matched counterparts without stroke. But what, as a rehabilitation field, are we doing to help these 7 million people living with this chronic impairment and disability? Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) paired with rehabilitation is a newly FDA-approved intervention to enhance the effects of rehabilitation in people with chronic stroke, but the clinical uptake has been slow. This symposium will review the evolution and development of this technology as a case example of how successful technology occurs. We will discuss pragmatic considerations for implementing this treatment and discuss potential barriers to adoption.
