I will present our study that investigates the role of culture in shaping the experience of assistive technology (AT) for people with disability. Specifically, we examine how cultural backgrounds impact the use and effectiveness of AT. The project seeks to explore the tensions that may arise for multicultural AT users when navigating an AT provision ecosystem. The goal of the study is to explore alternative understandings of assistance, providing a more inclusive examination of AT use and disuse from a multicultural perspective.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe cultural factors that influence how assistive technology is taken up by different families.
Upon completion, participant will be able to explain the interplay of structural forces and power relations among various interest groups in an AT provision piepline.
Upon completion, participant will be able to assess alternative methods for more effectively integrating cultural considerations into AT provision and design.
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe cultural factors that influence how assistive technology is taken up by different families.
