How to determine whether psychological factors are playing a role in a client’s clinical presentation, and how to introduce a focus on psychological factors without inviting defensive reactions from the client? Dr. Sullivan would review the factors identified by his research team (Pain catastrophizing, perceived injustices, expectancies), how to measure for them, and how they can be effectively incorporated into the plan of care. The unique contribution would focus on how psychological factors can be addressed with patients/clients without inviting defensive reactions such as as patients hearing their provider believes their dysfunction is "all in their head," that they aren't being believed, Area of Expertise : Dr. Michael Sullivan is currently Professor of Psychology, Medicine and Neurology at McGill University. He has lectured nationally and internationally on the social and behavioral determinants of pain-related disability.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be familiar with research findings pointing to the important role of psychological factors as determinants of recovery trajectories.
