Globally, over 774 million people have contracted COVID-19 since 2019, and while the number of infections has declined significantly since the early days of the pandemic, it continues to have a pervasive and chronic impact on mental health. Studies reveal a significant increase in anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among COVID-19 survivors and healthcare providers (HCPs). Further, turnover in healthcare is high, as many HCPs are also troubled by burnout, moral distress, or secondary traumatic stress. The complex and potentially long-term nature of physical, mental, and spiritual challenges of COVID-19, particularly Long COVID, are creating a growing demand and sustained need for specialized mental health services. While the growing demand for mental health services related to Long COVID creates a strain on an already overtaxed mental healthcare system, several potential solutions can address the gap between need and availability.
