Driving is an essential activity of daily living for many individuals to maintain their independence. Often individuals seen in rehabilitation have a primary goal of retiring to driving as this represents for them independence and autonomy. Returning to safe driving requires cognitive, physical and visual motor skills In this session we want to introduce the use of driving simulators to pre-determine appropriateness to complete an on the road driving assessment or even potential for return to driving. The driving simulator provides a controlled and standardized assessment that is reproducible and allows for also modifiable scenarios and conditions of driving for each client. The simulator provides objective data, capturing driver response to driving situations ,environmental conditions, and allow for more task demand conditions in this safe environment.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will have increased awareness of the role of technology in assessment of driving readiness
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the physical capabilities, vision/visual perceptual, and cognitive skills required for driving performance
Upon completion, participants will be able to demonstrate how technology can be integrated into clinical practice in the context of driving performance
