The proliferation of electronic health records (EHRs) across healthcare settings has generated new possibilities for using clinically generated data to improve rehabilitation outcomes at the population, program, and individual levels. For the Deborah L. Wilkerson Award, Dr. Alison M. Cogan will discuss a recently completed study that used clinical data to understand patient recovery and inform optimization of patient care. She will report on the outcomes of a study that used EHR and billing data from an inpatient rehabilitation unit over five years on the association between billed therapy codes and functional outcomes among adults with acquired brain injuries. Dr. Cogan will describe benefits and challenges of using clinical data for research as well as next steps in her research program.
Learning Objectives:
Identify risks to rehabilitation practitioners in the transition from volume- to value-based reimbursement models.
Identify challenges with current inpatient rehabilitation quality metrics and alignment with therapy service delivery.
Describe benefits and challenges of using electronic health record data in research.
