Chronic pain affects over 50 million Americans and is the principal cause of loss of work and independence world-wide. It has failed conventional care by definition and is often managed with opioid-class medications by default. Efforts to limit opiate prescribing have been temporally associated with decreased function and increased suicidality in this population. This study addresses this concern using a very gradual opioid dose reduction in chronic pain patients agreeable who are then compared with a similar group unwilling to do so over the same time period. The results are not encouraging, adding to the growing body of evidence that opioid dose reduction in this population may have negative health impact.

On completion, participants will be able to recognize signs of opioid overdose and suicide trends in United States

On completion participants will be able to recognize how to track functional and physiologic response to opioid dose reduction
