Combating the development and progression of hypertrophic scars is a key objective of burn rehabilitation. One of the most common and beneficial of rehabilitation interventions is prolonged positioning to elongate tissues and hypertrophic scars to promote range of motion and function. Positioning can be achieved through multiple avenues, but serial casting and orthotic fabrication can be one of the most effective. This symposium will address the benefits and risks of use of serial casting and orthotics with the burn population for all extremities and the face and neck. This symposium will provide demonstration of casting application techniques for the upper and lower extremities for attendees to observe. The goal of this symposium is to improve clinical comfort and competence in utilizing this effective burn rehabilitation intervention to improve patient outcomes across the rehabilitation continuum.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss the pathophysiology of hypertrophic scar formation related to the stages of wound healing.
2. Identify evidence-based scar management techniques across the rehabilitation continuum.
3. Describe serial casting and orthotic fabrication as it relates to clinical practice guidelines.
4. Recognize serial casting and orthotic materials and application techniques for extremities and face and neck scar management.
5. Examine development of competencies to improve clinical skills for casting and orthotic fabrication across the rehabilitation continuum.
