Dr. Abigail Akande is an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation & Human Services at Penn State University – Abington College. Previously, she taught at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in the Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling program. Dr. Akande has been a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor since 2006 and has served in a counseling capacity in secondary, post-secondary, state, and non-profit behavioral health settings across four states. She also engages in consulting work for the development and training of rehabilitation service providers in under-resourced countries. Dr. Akande’s research explores barriers to rehabilitation, education, and employment for women with disabilities in under-resourced countries, as well as immigrants with disabilities and chronic health conditions in the United States. This includes research and service endeavors related to domestic and international disability policy. She also engages in pedagogical research to enhance graduate and undergraduate curriculum approaches in rehabilitation, including topics related to Long COVID, narrative interviewing, virtual international exchange, and virtual reality.
