Jacob Sosnoff earned his PhD in Kinesiology from the Pennsylvania State University in 2005. While at Penn State he was fortunate to be a National Institute of Aging pre-doctoral fellow. Upon graduation, he joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health and climbed the academic ranks, reaching the rank of Professor in 2018. In Spring of 2021, he took the next step in his professional trajectory and joined the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) as the associate dean for research in the School of Health Professions and a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, and Athletic Training. He currently directs the mobility and falls lab at KUMC.
Sosnoff’s research focuses on the predictors, prevention, and consequences of mobility impairment in clinical populations. He and his team examine how we move, how to keep us moving, and what happens when we don’t move well. He has a special interest in the development and refinement of technology capable of measuring our movement. He is actively engaged in several ongoing randomized control trials investigating rehabilitation strategies to maximize mobility and minimize fall risk, injury, and incidence. He has been fortunate to collaborate with leading rehabilitation researchers, resulting in over 200 peer-reviewed publications, and has been featured in leading media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. His work has been continuously funded for the last two decades. It is currently supported by the National Institutes of Health, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and and industry partners.
