Physical Therapist and Clinical Researcher

Jacob Massey, PT, DPT, CSCS serves a dual role at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals as both a Research Physical Therapist and an Outpatient Physical Therapist treating various neurological and orthopedic diagnoses throughout the lifespan. As a treating practitioner, I collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to deliver reliable and consistent patient care through evidence-based practice to improve physical function and maximize independence to affect quality of life positively. I work alongside a group of multidisciplinary clinical researchers in developing the Post-COVID Model System at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals. This project has involved advancing a set of core outcome measures to capture a holistic assessment of those being evaluated in the Post-COVID clinic showing functional deficits across the care continuum that drive therapeutic interventions while guiding long-term best practice. As part of my work as a Clinical Researcher, I assist with the validation and utilization of high-tech devices, including the use of force plates paired with virtual reality to augment the center of gravity and balance strategy biofeedback, to translate research-driven recommendations from the most recent clinical practice guidelines to clinicians. In my clinical research role, I assist with multiple research projects to advance clinical expertise, which involves the use of motion capture systems for marker- and marker-less kinematic analysis, gait mats allowing for instantaneous spatiotemporal and center of pressure walking analysis, and metabolic testing equipment measuring exercise capacity and maximal oxygen uptake with continuous vital sign monitoring. I've also collaborated with Madonna's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physicians to develop a testing battery for comprehensive assessment of the autonomic nervous system for which I work as a testing technician. My hybrid role has allowed me the unique opportunity to serve as a co-facilitator of Madonna's Post-COVID Education and Support Group to provide education and community awareness into the management of a novel health condition.
