Medical Student
University of Miami
My name is Eduardo Chavez, and I am a second-year medical student at the University of Miami. My long-term research interests include looking into the many factors contributing to disparity, and the intersectionality between them, such as race, disability, and class. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the importance of scientific communication and the healthcare disparities encountered in marginalized and underserved communities; the multifaceted nature of alleviating these disparities makes for incredibly impactful work, both for the health of the patient, and the health of the community and society at large. I am currently working with Dr. Jonathan Burke at NYU, looking at national county and city budgets and determining trends in carceral spending and social spending for health outcomes. I am also working with Dr. David McMillan in the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis in nutrition and exercise physiology, spending a lot of time volunteering with patients who have endured a spinal cord injury and helping them exercise. I hope to continue down the path of rehabilitation medicine through the PM&R track.
