Emily Johnston is currently a Research Assistant at the Michigan Medicine Center for Disability Health and Wellness, where she contributes to research regarding disability equity and education. Her academic background, in biology and public health, has given her an understanding of the health challenges and systemic barriers that affect people with disabilities (PWD). Her research interests involve the intersection of chronic illness and disability, with a focus on aging across the lifespan.
At Michigan Medicine, she is involved in several ongoing projects. She assists in the research of spinal cord injury e-learning modules aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers. Additionally, she is engaged in preliminary research for the creation of a Disability Healthcare Equity Index, designed to support hospital systems in evaluating their quality of care for PWD and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines. Most recently, she is assisting in research regarding how access—or the lack thereof—affects the health and well-being of disabled individuals as they age. Overall, she is passionate about research that not only expands our understanding of disability and chronic illness but also translates into tangible improvements in the lives of those affected.
