Michael A. Van Doren, MSN, RN is a Senior Instructor in the School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP) at the University of the Incarnate Word. Mr. Van Doren received both his Bachelor's and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. During his Bachelor’s degree program Mr. Van Doren studied in an ambulatory care track that was innovative for the time. For his
Master’s degree program: Mr. Van Doren majored in Community Health Nursing and minored in Teaching. Mr. Van Doren has over 43 years of nursing experience, including practice in public health and psychiatric and substance use disorders. For 25 years, he was the Program Director for the state-wide Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses. In that role, he was recognized by the National (now International) Nurses Society on Addictions for his outstanding contributions to peer assistance. Mr. Van Doren also served as a key contributor to the National Council of
State Boards of Nursing’s Substance Use Disorder in Nursing resource manual. Mr. Van Doren has taught at the baccalaureate level in nursing for approximately 12 years, with his current focus on Community Health and Psychiatric Mental Health. Most recently, Mr. Van Doren developed and began teaching a new course, Environmental Health Education, within the SNHP’s Community Health Education Department.
