Anastasia Zarkou PT, MS, PhD
Research Scientist, Spinal Cord Injury Research and The Hulse Spinal Cord Injury Laboratory
Dr. Zarkou, a physical therapist by training, received her Ph.D. in Biomechanics and Movement Sciences from the University of Delaware. Her dissertation work aimed at identifying distal lower extremity somatosensation deficits, delineating their relationship with balance and motor function, and investigating if they can be modulated by utilizing random noise stimulation to enhance balance control in children with cerebral palsy. She received a postdoctoral fellowship from Craig H. Neilsen Foundation to investigate the effects of transcranial Random Noise Stimulation on cortical excitability, motor and sensory function in individuals with spinal cord injury. Overall, her current research interests focus on investigating non-invasive and highly translational to clinical practice therapeutic methods to enhance neuroplasticity, promote motor and sensory function, and improve the overall quality of life in people with spinal cord injury.
