Dr Mark Elkins is an internationally recognised expert in respiratory physiotherapy and evidence-based practice. His research has focussed on the interactions between physical and pharmacological therapies in people with chronic lung disease – especially cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. However, he also maintains a strong research pathway assessing and promoting the quality of clinical research in physiotherapy.
Mark is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney in the Sydney Medical School’s Central Clinical School. He is also a senior research physiotherapist in the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Mark has published 15 book chapters, 62 original research papers and 28 editorials. His research has been funded by over $3.3million in competitive research funding and over $700,000 in in-kind support from industry.
He has supervised three PhD students, four Masters students and one Honours student. This research supervision will continue in his new role as a Research Education Consultant in the Centre for Education & Workforce Development, within the Sydney Local Health District.
As the Editor in Chief of the highest ranking physiotherapy journal in the word, Journal of Physiotherapy and as a co-director of the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (www.pedro.org.au), Mark has extensive experience in appraising the quality of research protocols and completed research. Mark is widely sought after as a speaker on clinical research design. He regularly participates in initiatives to improve the standard of clinical research in physiotherapy.
