Dr. Whyte is a physiatrist and experimental psychologist specializing in research and clinical care for individuals with severe brain injury, including disorders of consciousness. He is the founding director of the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute, where he continues as Institute Scientist Emeritus. His research has been funded by NIDILRR, PCORI, the NIH, the Department of Defense, as well as private philanthopic sources. He is one of the original developers of the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) and continues to be involved in its refinement and dissemination. He is a Fellow of the ACRM, and recipient of the Distinguished Member, the John Stanley Coulter Lectureship, and the Gold Key Award.
