Programme Director, Occupational & Aviation Medicine
University of Otago
Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand
I am an occupational physician, trained in the UK, and with Fellowships in the UK, Ireland, Australasia and the USA. I came to New Zealand to be the Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Transport in 1984 after being an aviation medicine specialist in the UK Royal Air Force. I set up this programme in 1987 and it has grown in scope and numbers in the past 32 years. I work part-time and I have 18 part-time academic staff so my job is mainly to sign the cheques and take the blame for the programme. I have been set up this paper in 1997 and have been running it ever since.
I am currently trying to get OAM established in the USA. A decade ago, we ran a joint venture with Harvard Medical School Dubai Center to teach occupational medicine across the Middle East, while I was also working as a consultant to Emirates and Etihad. I am also an affiliate professor of occupational medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle where UW and Otago Wellington teach occupational medicine in WA, and I ran a similar programme with the construction union there. I am the Foundations Program Director for the American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine in Chicago, and on the ACOEM House of Delegates and Council on Education & Academic Affairs. I'm also an adjunct professor at West Virginia University.
I am interested in return to work, and work for the NZ Accident Compensation Corporation where I am a Principal Clinical Adviser in the Corporate Clinical Advice team. I also have a return to work program for the construction industry in Washington State, USA, funded by the Department of Labor & Industries.
