Georgia State University School of Nursing
ATLANTA, GA, United States
Dr. Dawn Aycock is a Professor in the School of Nursing at Georgia State University and Director of the PhD program. Her 30-year career has primarily focused on advancing nursing science through research, education, and service. Early in her career, she was project coordinator on a NINR R01-funded study examining family caregivers of stroke survivors, linked with the Extremity Constraint-Induced Therapy Evaluation (EXCITE) trial. This, along with her experiences caring for stroke survivors and family history of stroke led to her program of research in stroke prevention. Aycock has moved stroke prevention science forward by heightening awareness of the need to address stroke risk in young adulthood. She has received national recognition for her Stroke Counseling for Risk Reduction (SCORRE) intervention, an age-and culturally tailored model designed to increase accuracy of perceived stroke risk and healthy lifestyle behaviors to reduce stroke risk in African Americans aged 20-35 years. Additionally, she has advanced nursing through publications and other efforts highlighting strategies to: increase methodological rigor in research, enhance healthcare communication with the concept language sensitivity, and increase and diversify the field of nurse scientists. Aycock is a fellow in American Academy of Nursing, the American Heart Association, and Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association for her research impact and leadership excellence.
