Melissa Earley earned her BSN from Virginia Commonwealth University and holds a multi-state compact RN license. She is a Qualified Mental Health Professional and a Paramedic. She has had multiple brain injuries over the course of her life and has earned her PCS (Post-Concussion Syndrome).
Melissa was one of four nurses nationwide recognized by the ANA during The Year of The Nurse for contributions to the nursing profession, specifically chosen for her efforts to destigmatize seeking care for mental health and substance use disorders especially when related to exposure to trauma at work. She was also awarded The President’s Award for Volunteer Service by President Obama.
Melissa is an impassioned advocate, helping to improve laws related to workplace violence, mandated reporting of health professionals seeking mental health services, removing barriers precluding licensure, and healthcare provider’s rights under the ADA. Using her firsthand experiences trying to obtain services while proving her competence, she hopes to raise awareness of living with a disability after TBI, from a survivor’s perspective through the lens of a healthcare provider.
In her free time, she enjoys ocean adventures with her life partner of 23 years and their two dogs.
