Throughout her public health career, Leigh Johnson's work has focused on creating health equity solutions within diverse, underrepresented populations. Her research focuses on addressing social determinants across the lifespan, including studies pertaining to pediatric, geriatric, immigrant/Limited English proficient, persons living with disabilities and other minority communities. Leigh earned her Master’s in Public Health from Mercer University College of Health Professions, in addition to two undergraduate degrees from Emory University in Cultural Anthropology and Human Biology. Her training background is in preventative and predictive health; however, she has also served as an evaluator across several studies. In the early years of her career, Leigh worked with nationally and internationally recognized research institutes, such as Emory University, Oxford College, Mercer University, NYU, Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine, the Georgia School-Based Health Alliance (GASBHA), the National Alliance of School-Based Health Centers (NASBHC) and the European Union, on various community based participatory research and translational research studies. Leigh later served as a research assistant on both privately-funded and federally-funded grants across both community intervention based and institution quality improvement studies. She now serves as an assistant research scientist for the NYU Clinical and Translational Science Institute as well as the Co-Chair of the Association of Clinical and Translational Science (ACTS) Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) special interest group (SIG). In 2023, Leigh earned her Certificate in Fundamentals of Documentary Filmmaking from the NYU Tisch Film School and she is currently working alongside the NYU CTSI to create video projects addressing areas of mistrust and highlighting patient-centered experiences in cancer and clinical trial settings. Her long-term goal is to improve the culture of inclusivity and equity across our health system by fostering bi-directional trust amongst patients and providers through visual story-telling.
