There is a need for common data elements to promote investigations of the social determinants of health in spinal cord injury outcomes research. This symposium will describe the collaborative process used to develop composite measures of neighborhood economic factors for use in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses conducted with the national SCI Model Systems database. The iterative conceptual review and data reduction techniques used by the investigators resulted in two robust measures of distinct economic characteristics: neighborhood socioeconomic status and neighborhood disadvantage. The application of these predictors in specific analyses of obesity and employment after injury as well as future applications to outcomes research will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

• Upon completion of this symposium, participants will be able to recognize best practices for the development of composite measures of neighborhoods and other small geographic areas using administrative data linked with survey data.
• Upon completion of this symposium, participants will be able to describe the two neighborhood economic composite measures developed for use with the national SCIMS database and how researchers can access these measures.
• Upon completion of this symposium, participants will be able to describe the association between neighborhood economic factors and at least one outcome of people with SCI living in the community.
• Upon completion of this symposium, participants will be able to formulate research questions to evaluate geographic disparities in the long-term health outcomes among adults living with SCI and the potential role of neighborhood economic factors.
