TBI is a chronic condition with complex comorbidities. Understanding this complexity to improve access to health care is important given that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a lifetime provider for Veterans with TBI. In this symposium, Dr. Cotner will present an access to healthcare framework to show how it can be used to inform selection of implementation strategies to optimize outcomes for Veterans with TBI with chronic pain. Dr. Pugh will present her study that compared longitudinal comorbidity phenotypes among Veterans with mild TBI across 3 eras of Post-9/11 conflicts. Her work shows how complexity increases over time along with polypharmacy. Dr. McCauley will present an integrated care model for addressing substance use in an interdisciplinary TBI treatment program for Veterans and treatment outcomes for those with and without co-occurring SU. These presentations examine factors that influence access to healthcare by Veterans with chronic TBI and complex conditions.
