Tom Southern is, by trade, a speech-language pathologist. Presently he is a Regional Administrator and Director of Skilled Home Health Services for Elara Caring in the Eastern Michigan area.
Tom is trained as an Integrated Chronic Care Management Specialist, as a Lee Silverman Voice Treatment - Loud Provider, as well as being trained in the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with Vitalstim. Additionally, he holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.
He has been recognized by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association as holding a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) since 2012 and won the ASHA "ACE" Award in 2015 and 2021.
Tom is a 2019 graduate of Northwestern University's clinical doctorate in speech-language pathology program as part of their inaugural cohort. His dissertation was a Lean Six Sigma methodology based process improvement project at his primary employer that focused on the utilization of OASIS data collection, coordination of care and precise patient aligned goal creation to improve quality of patient outcomes.
As a clinical specialization, he completed the Disruptive Strategy certificate course via Harvard Business School Online in June 2018.
He completed his Master's degree at Wayne State University in 2011 and served as the President of the Wayne State Speech-Language Hearing Association during 2010. His Bachelor's degree, also awarded at WSU, was in English and completed in 1999.
