Robert Buren is a PhD student in Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia. He completed a BA Honours in Sociology at King’s College, University of Western Ontario, and a MA in sociology at the University of Victoria. In 2008, Robert sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). In 2013 he became the first paraplegic Canadian to complete a full Ironman triathlon (226 kms), and in 2016 he placed 2nd at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Currently, Robert is a member of the SCI Action Lab at UBC Okanagan and ICORD. His PhD studies focus on psychology-based therapies targeting the elimination of chronic pain among individuals with an SCI. Robert values his partnerships with Spinal Cord Injury Ontario and Mitacs, and collaborations with other SCI researchers in Ontario and BC.
