Dr. Chrisann Schiro-Geist earned her Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Northwestern University in 1974 and has been a licensed clinical psychologist and certified rehabilitation counselor for nearly 40 years. She has authored over 80 articles and hundreds of presentations focusing on rehabilitation counseling. Her work has garnered over $26 million in grant funding, and she has received more than 50 honors and awards. As the director of the University of Memphis Institute on Disability (UMID) since its founding in 2007, Dr. Schiro-Geist has led the expansion of programs in transition and vocational training. Her relevant professional experiences include roles as Senior Vice-Provost at the University of Memphis, Director of Disability and Rehabilitation Education and Training, and Director of the Disability Research Institute at the University of Illinois . Dr. Schiro-Geist has specialized in "transition to work" for individuals with disabilities since the early 1980s. She collaborated with Dr. Frank Rusch from the Universityto develop technical assistance for the Place/Train model of supported employment and served as a consultant and trainer on a national Department of Education grant.She served as Principal Investigator on several RSA-funded long-term training grants and as a major subcontractor for the RRCEP for CRPs at the University of Wisconsin at Stout .In 1993, she received a World Rehabilitation Fellowship to study distance education in Australia, pioneering these methods in Rehabilitation Counseling. Dr. Schiro-Geist is the Editor of the Journal of Forensic Vocational Analysis and past president of the American Board of Vocational Experts (ABVE). She has been honored with numerous awards for her contributions to rehabilitation counseling, including the National Council on Rehabilitation Education's Distinguished Career in Rehabilitation Education Award in 2009 and the Clayton Morgan Memorial Award of Excellence in 2012. She is also a distinguished member of the VRCC, representing major rehabilitation organizations.
