Robert Scales, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. He is also a volunteer Clinical Professor at Arizona State University. He joined Mayo Clinic in 2008 as an exercise physiologist and in his administrative role he has provided leadership in the development of a cardiology-based initiative that is designed to prevent heart disease and related conditions.
This includes a partnership with primary care and specialty clinics to conduct medically-directed exercise physiology consultations that promote the American College of Sport’s Medicine’s Exercise is Medicine global initiative. His primary research interest is the application of motivational interviewing and effective clinician-patient communication in the healthcare setting. Currently, he is Principal Investigator in a multi-site randomized controlled trial to evaluate fall risk prevention in cardiac rehabilitation with a mobile-health delivered intervention. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, a Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and an advisory board member of the International Concussion Society.
