Dr. Stegemöller is an associate professor in the Department Kinesiology at Iowa State University with appointments in the Intergrated Neuroscience Graduate Program (director of program) and the Gerontology Graduate Program. Stegemöller is also the director of the Alternative Medicine and Music for Parkinson’s Disease (AMMPD) Laboratory and co-director of the Motor Control Laboratory mentoring six graduate students, three masters students, and over 30 undergraduate students in her research program. Stegemöller has extensive research training and expertise in researching the effects of singing using both clinical and objective measurements in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Stegemöller has expertise in various neurophysiology methods including the use of electroencephalogram (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and motion capture, including wearable sensors. Additionally, Stegemöller has substantial clinical experience working with people with PD leading three weekly outreach programs for persons with PD. Over 30 persons with PD attend these singing, dancing, and boxing groups. Finally, Stegemöller is the only board certified music therapist with a PhD in Neuroscience in the United States and is recognized as an expert in the field, being invited as a guest panel on aging for the NIH Sound Initiative workshop.
