Assistant Professor
Ohio State University
Columbus, OH, United States
Dr. Wengerd is an Assistant Professor in the Divisions of Neurological Surgery and Occupational Therapy at The Ohio State University and holds a faculty appointment in the NeuroTech Institute in Columbus, Ohio. Her research agenda is focused on identifying novel technologies and approaches to maximize upper extremity function in adults with neurological conditions, with a particular focus on implementation science and how we translate novel technologies into real-world practice settings. Dr. Wengerd obtained her PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at OSU and her master’s in occupational therapy at the Medical University of South Carolina. Her passion for bridging the research-to-practice gap was born out of necessity – as a full-time occupational therapist in outpatient rehabilitation, she experienced firsthand the limited evidence and technologies available to maximize hand function in adults with neurological conditions such as stroke and spinal cord injury. While there have been numerous novel technologies developed over the past decade, most technologies are limited to research settings and lack the ability to truly maximize function in adults with stroke-related hemiparesis. She has continuously worked on interprofessional teams of biomedical engineers, physicians, therapists, and researchers to develop user-friendly, functional upper extremity technologies for individuals with neurological impairment. She have also served on numerous national committees to advance rehabilitation research and maximize quality of life for individuals with neurological impairment, including several ACRM Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) task groups.
