Birmingham, AL, United States
Yumi Kim is currently holding a Scientist I position in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She received her doctoral degree in Rehabilitation Science from the UAB and Bachelor's/Master's degrees in Kinesiology, Adapted Physical Activity from California State University, Northridge. Her prior experience involved working at land- and aquatic-based therapeutic exercise center for individuals with various types of disabilities (i.e., stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury).
Her research interest focuses on developing and implementing community-based interventions delivered via the telehealth platform to enhance accessibility to physical activity for people with disabilities. Her dissertation, which involves both quantitative and qualitative methods, examines factors influencing the initiation and maintenance of physical activity behavior in adults with multiple sclerosis. She aims to develop theory-based interventions tailored to the readiness of physical activity behavior and functional mobility of people with disabilities.
She received postdoctoral fellowship funding from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation (May 2024 - April 2026). The study aims to identify factors influencing people with spinal cord injury when joining clinical trials that promote exercise and physical activity participation. The study applied a discrete choice experiment design, initially developed in the business field and translated into the healthcare system. This design uses (1) qualitative interviews to identify individual preferences and needs and (2) quantitative surveys that are systematically developed based on the interview findings to capture a larger volume of responses (Question. Which program would you like to participate in? A vs. B).
