From Interview to Educational Resource: Translating the Lived Experience of Carepartners of Persons with TBI Using the Framework analysis Method

Research Objectives: To demonstrate the process of translating qualitative findings into an educational toolkit designed for care partners of persons with TBI.

Design: Qualitative study

Setting: Community and referral-based outreach in urban setting

Participants: N=13 caregiver (interviews) and N=30 care partners for stakeholder feedback

Interventions: Not applicable

Main Outcome Measures: Not applicable

Results: This study utilized the Framework Analysis method to code 13 care partner semi-structured interviews. The themes identified in the qualitative analysis helped determine the topics addressed, as well as strategies provided, in the educational tools. Educational materials are developed into chapters covering themes, such as self-care as a coping method in caregiving, receiving help from others to cope, and how caregiving responsibilities may affect employment. Additionally, stakeholders reviewed the developed content for relevance, readability, look, and feel. Feedback on the educational tools, collected during a conference for individuals with TBI and care partners was used to determine the effectiveness of the tool.

Conclusions: Qualitative data collected from care partners of persons living with TBI contribute to educational tools that are designed to be more meaningful and relatable to consumers. Use of quotes and examples from lived experiences combined uniquely with input from health professionals in the creation of these tools.
