Virtual Reality for Interprofessional De-escalation Training: A Technological Approach

Research Objectives: This study aimed to explore the utilization of virtual reality (VR) technology in the de-escalation training of nurse practitioner students with the goal of enhancing their conflict resolution skills.

Design: Educational/Observation

Setting: Institution of Higher Education

Participants: Nurse Practitioner Students - 40 pre-licensure nurse practitioner students

Interventions: De-Escalation & Crisis communication training. Approximately 12 hours.

Main Outcome Measures: Role and effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) based simulation in de-escalation training and crisis communication for nurse practitioner students.
Efficacy of interprofessional collaboration on nurse practitioner student de-escalation training utilizing a VR based simulated environment.
Role of VR as an adaptive learning strategy to evaluate the principles of de-escalation training.

Results: Perception of enhanced de-escalation skills. Effective use of VR in de-escalation training. Perception of effective collaboration with University Police Services

Conclusions: This study aimed to explore the utilization of virtual reality (VR) technology in the de-escalation training of nurse practitioner students with the goal of enhancing their conflict resolution skills. The study deployed non-traditional interprofessional collaboration with University Police Services. Through immersive VR simulations, participants engaged in realistic scenarios requiring collaborative problem-solving and communication to de-escalate tense situations effectively. The study examined the effectiveness of VR-based training, highlighting its potential to improve interprofessional collaboration avenues to enhance the mitigation of conflict in various clinical settings.
