Identity is a choice. After stroke, the question isn’t just “who AM I now”, it is “who do I WANT TO BE now?” Disabilities may limit choices, but they don’t have to dictate who we are.
In this plenary, Stanford Professor Debra Meyerson and her husband, care partner, and social entrepreneur Steve Zuckerman, share their unique insights on rebuilding identity in recovery. Dr. Meyerson’s research and their shared lived experience is documented in her book ‘Identity Theft’ (2019, with a 2nd edition release in Spring 2025). Together, Deb and Steve led a 4,500 mile bike across America to promote the need for support of the emotional journey in recovery, and co-founded a nonprofit committed to raising awareness, developing resources, and catalyzing change in the systems of stroke care to include a whole person approach.
