This symposium addresses emerging recognition of central sensitization as underlying mechanisms of chronic low back pain due to pathological changes within the central nervous system pain processing. We will explore objective and subjective assessment of central sensitization in people with chronic low back pain. Assessment encompasses sensory, motor, psychological, and sleep dysfunctions. Objective measures of pain threshold with quantitative sensory testing, specific to peripheral, central sensitization, and inhibitory descending pain mechanisms will be correlated with subjective surveys, to highlight effective and efficient integration of simple subjective surveys in clinical practice to screen for central sensitization. By comprehensively examining central sensitization, the symposium aims to inform tailored interventions for mitigating central sensitization and optimize rehabilitation approaches for chronic low back pain.
