Neena Sharma, PT, PhD, CMPT is an associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, and Athletic Training at the University of Kansas Medical Center, KC, KS. Dr. Sharma has over 20 years of teaching and patient care experience and 15 years of research experience. She teaches Orthopedic courses in the entry level DPT program and mentors PhD students. Dr. Sharma has been involved in the university’s and department’s many Diversity, Equity and Inclusive initiatives and activities for past several years, with regards to training DPT students to provide equitable and inclusive care, individualized to each patient.
Dr. Sharma’s research interests relate to low back pain mechanisms e.g. central sensitization and spine mechanics and rehabilitative and integrative approaches and assistive technology to address chronic pain symptoms. Utilizing diagnostic tools such as fMRI and spectroscopy, objective methods e.g. quantitative sensory testing, and patient reported outcomes, Dr. Sharma and her research team is dedicated to exploring the underlying mechanisms of low back pain. A variety of rehabilitative, integrative and technology approaches are used to address chronicity of pain and minimize opioid use. By studying the musculoskeletal and central nervous system through non-invasive methods, she aims to improve patient care and advance the field of clinical orthopedics and chronic pain management.
