The exact causes of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are varied and may include early stages of neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD, evidenced by brain changes like plaques and tangles, microscopic protein clumps, small strokes, or reduced blood flow through brain vessels. Like MCI, Motoric Cognitive Risk syndrome (MCR) is a preclinical dementia syndrome, the gray area of cognitive aging. Unlike MCI, which often requires extensive time and resources to diagnose individuals (e.g., biomarkers, neuroimaging, neuropsychological testing), MCR identifies individuals who are at risk of transitioning to dementia by utilizing clinically feasible tools such as gait speed and subjective cognitive concerns. This symposium will present an overview of the state of the science on MCI and MRC. In addition, this symposium will provide attendees with an overview of current and emerging cognitive assessment tools available through smart personal devices (mHealth).
