Following an introduction talk by Dr. Studer on how robotic and advanced technology can be utilized for the rehabilitation of severely to lightly impaired patients, three indepth talks will provide a deepdive into different phases of care and treatment goals:
Dr. Stokic (Methodist Rehabilitation Center) will start with the basic operating principles of a device for upper limb rehabilitation. The impact of proximal arm impairment across the range of weight compensation will be demonstrated and the implications for initiating and progressing technology-assisted upper limb therapy will be discussed. Dr. Jenna Tosta (Icahn School of Medicine) will review recent evidence on how robotics and other advanced technologies can help promote functional recovery and optimize patient outcomes across the continuum of care. Finally, Dr Swinnen (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) will take us to expand the horizons from rehabilitation and functional recovery to functional outcome improvement enabling long term prevention of age-related physical decline. 

Learning Objectives:

  • describe how novel robotic and advanced technology can be utilized across the continuum of care from very severely to lightly impaired patients.
  • describe the basic operating principles of a passive exoskeleton for upper limb training and can describe how changing a training parameter such as the weight support affects motor performance.
  • form ideas for implementation of evidence-based practice to stimulate motor recovery and patient reported outcome measures in moderately to severely affected patients.
  • describe how robotics and rehabilitation technologies and their specific features are not only beneficial for rehabilitation, but also how these show substantial positive improvements in various motor outcomes across diverse health conditions.
